New Railway Link through
the Alps: A Swiss Pioneer Achievement
Though a small country, Switzerland
possesses a unique collection of civil engineering constructions which,
at the time of their realisation, quite often represented pioneering
feats. This is not as surprising as it may seem, since life in Alpine
regions often requires special routines and extra efforts by its
population.
One of the most demanding challenges was and still is the crossing of
the tremendous mountain ranges that separate the Northern from the
Southern Europe, requiring enormous innovation efforts by civil
engineers. Countless constructions of the past and present are
spectacular testimony to their creative powers.
At the moment we are witnessing the most recent chapter of Swiss
traffic history, the construction of the New Rail Link through the Alps
(NRLA). The present volume, based on the exhibition in the
“Hänggiturm” of the year 2006, documents
the tremendous efforts of the builders of this century-project.
The wide selection of pictures from the Gotthard and the
Lötschberg Base Tunnel job sites, the audio-visual facilities
and the historical tools were lent by the communication team of the
AlpTransit Gotthard AG and the BLS Alp-Transit AG.
