Holcim Forum for Sustainable Construction 2004
First Forum: The diversity of sustainability At the Holcim Forum for
Sustainable Construction 120 experts from around the world met for
discussions and workshops on sustainable construction. The recently
published book First Forum captures the spirit of the Forum and
provides a valuable reference for the discussion of critical questions
about the future. The Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction
was established in December 2003 to participate actively in the
discussion of sustainable building. Last September at the Swiss Federal
Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich), the Foundation held its first
large event: the Holcim Forum for Sustainable Construction. The
numerous contributions, discussions, lectures, and findings have now
been documented in a book: First Forum. Although over 220 pages long,
it is not a book in the classic sense but rather a richly illustrated
and attractively organized compendium that is ideal for browsing or
approaching the subject from many angles. Among the many prominent
participants at the Forum were the Portuguese star architect Eduardo
Souto de Moura, the inventor of microcredit Muhammad Yunus, the
internationally active politician Simon Upton, and the Dutch architect
and urban planner Winy Maas. The diversity of contributions highlights
one thing above all: sustainable building is not just a technical
issue, but also a sociopolitical and philosophical one. Hence First
Forum is stimulating reading for people directly involved with building
– and also for anyone who wants to know the current state of
the discussion of basic future issues. The Holcim Forum is an event of
the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction, based in
Switzerland. This independent Foundation is an initiative of Holcim
Ltd, a worldwide leading provider of cement, aggregates (crushed stone,
gravel and sand), concrete and construction-related services. Holcim
holds majority and minority interests in over 70 countries on all
continents.
